SERMI & security work

SERMI-approved key and security repairs

Lost keys, immobiliser faults and security modules — done by an approved garage, with the ID check the law requires.

What SERMI is

SERMI is the UK scheme that controls access to a vehicle's security-related repair and maintenance information — the functions needed to program keys, repair immobilisers and alarms, replace locks and code certain control modules. Only approved and authorised garages can do that work, and every job has to be recorded against an identity check.

Oswins Garage is SERMI-approved. In practice it means two things for you: we can do the security jobs many garages cannot, and we will ask you for documents before we start.

What to bring

  • The V5C logbook for the vehicle — the original, not a photo.
  • Photo ID for the person bringing the vehicle in: driving licence, passport, national identity card, or a roadside-assistance membership card with your name on it.
  • If the vehicle belongs to a company or a fleet, the name and phone number of the person authorising the work.

What we record — and what we don't

We check the VIN on the car against the V5C and note the registered keeper, the V5C issue date, who presented the vehicle and the ID type and number on your signed job sheet. The scheme requires us to keep that record for five years. We do not take copies of your documents, and the identity details are stored encrypted.

Security work we carry out

  • Lost or additional keys and remotes programmed
  • Immobiliser and alarm faults
  • Keyless entry and start faults
  • Replacement of security-related control modules
  • Lock and ignition barrel work

Dealer-level key programming for Ford, Peugeot, Citroën, DS, Vauxhall (current models), Mercedes-Benz, VW, SEAT, Škoda, Audi, Land Rover and Jaguar.

Book a key or security job

Why it exists

Without an identity check, anyone with the right tool could have a key made for a car that isn't theirs. SERMI closes that door while keeping security repairs available at independent garages rather than only main dealers. It adds about two minutes at the counter. We think that is a fair trade, and it is the law.

Questions people ask

I have lost the V5C. Can you still program a key?

Not until a replacement V5C has been issued by the DVLA — that is a scheme rule. A replacement can be ordered online and usually arrives within five working days.

Can my partner bring the car in for the key?

Yes, with their own photo ID; we record who presented the vehicle. The V5C still needs to come with the car.

Does this apply to a spare key?

Yes — any key programming is security-related work.

Does it apply to servicing or brakes?

No. SERMI only applies to security-related work: keys, immobilisers, alarms, locks and certain modules.

Is my information safe?

The details are recorded on the job sheet you sign, stored encrypted, kept for the five years the scheme requires and then deleted. We do not keep copies of documents.

Book online, straight into our workshop diary

Pick a time that is actually free — the booking goes into the same diary we run the workshop from, so there is no "we'll ring you back to confirm" for servicing and checks. Diagnostics and repairs: describe the fault and we will call you.
