Replacing a key or fixing an immobiliser: what SERMI means for you

Why a garage now has to check your ID and V5C before security-related work, and what to bring.

SERMI is the UK scheme that controls who can access a vehicle's security functions — key programming, immobiliser and alarm work, locks and some module replacements. Garages have to be approved, and for every security job they must record who asked for the work and confirm the vehicle is theirs to ask about.

In practice that means when you book a key or immobiliser job with us we will ask to see the V5C (logbook) for the vehicle and photo ID for the person bringing it in — a driving licence or passport. We check the VIN on the car against the V5C, record the details on your signed job sheet, and keep that record for five years as the scheme requires. We do not keep copies of your documents.

If the car belongs to a company or a fleet, we also need the name and contact of the person at the company authorising the work.

It adds two minutes at the counter, and it is what stops a stolen car being given a new key. We think that is worth it, and it is the law.

Questions people ask

What ID do you accept?

A photocard driving licence, passport, national identity card or a roadside-assistance membership card with your name on it, together with the V5C.

I have lost the V5C — can you still do the key?

Not until a replacement V5C is issued by the DVLA. That is a scheme rule, not ours. Ordering a replacement online takes about five days.

Does this apply to a spare key?

Yes — any key programming is security-related work.

Book online, straight into our workshop diary

Pick a time that is actually free — the booking goes into the same diary we run the workshop from, so there is no "we'll ring you back to confirm" for servicing and checks. Diagnostics and repairs: describe the fault and we will call you.
